(The path of our 6 day live aboard adventure.)

I love rubbing shoulders and sharing ideas with other underwater photographers. I always come away inspired. It's one of the reasons I love these Channel Islands trips. Sharing the hobby fuels my passion, and when I have the opportunity to be part of a group of skilled shooters all the better. We had some very advanced shooters among us on our Nov 2018 six day trip.

The amazing underwater photographer, our host, and my dear friend Richard Salas gave daily workshops on lighting techniques. His focus was all about us learning new approaches to underwater photography and refining our skills. We had a blast! It was six days of amazing diving with a truly wonderful group of people!

We dived some of the very best sites of the California Channel Islands, from San Miguel to San Clemente. Here are some of the images I came up with.

Departing aboard the Vision from Santa Barbara, CA, our first stop was Santa Barbara Island - a tiny and remote island with no human mark except a single structure for the park warden. The kelp forests surrounding the island are sublime diving environments.

The second day was awesome! We dived Santa Catalina Island, including a couple of amazing oil platform dives out in the deep water of the San Pedro Channel. The pylons go down 200+ ft, and are covered thick with invertebrates. After the oil rig dives, we went to Catalina where I was lucky to photograph a Giant Black Sea Bass. (5+ ft.)

On the third day we dived the west end of San Clemente Island, where I managed a decent over/under shot of the kelp and the dive boat.

All these images were shot with a Nikon DSLR in a Aquatica housing and dual Z240 Inon strobes using Ultralight Bouyancy arms.

Wide angle was done with a Nikkor 12-24mm lens, and macro with a Nikkor Micro 105mm.

On the fourth day we returned to Santa Barbara Island, to dive with California Sea Lions. (A true highlight of the trip!)

On the final two days we dived at San Miguel Island, the westernmost and northernmost of the Channel Islands. The thick invertebrate life at San Miguel's dive sites like Wyckoff Ledge, Richardson's Rock, and Wilson's Rock is utterly stunning. Beautiful!
